Description
This optional upgrade to YRC MK5/MK7 Modular wing systems gives the ability to increase downforce a further 10-15% (depending on angle of attack) with a minimal drag penalty. Delaying the mixing of the high and low pressure flows coming off of an airfoil, Gurney flaps work by creating a rotating recirculation bubble behind the wing. This effectively lengthens the chord of the airfoil, reducing the tendency to stall and allowing for an increased angle of attack. Our design does a traditional Gurney flap one better by angling the trailing edges of the flap towards the center to direct the vortices inward. This increases the pressure gradient above the wing slightly while using vortex shedding to more efficiently mix the high and low pressure flows. Made from laser cut .040 5052 aluminum, our serrated Gurney flap has comparable performance to a traditional flat design, but with additional reductions to parasitic drag.
